Information
Real hair is structured from a protein called ‘Keratin’ and consists of three distinct layers that run through each hair shaft. These layers are called the cuticle, the cortex and the medulla.
The cuticle
This is the outer layer of the hair shaft and acts as a shield to protect the inside of the hair. It is built up of tiny layers of overlapping scales that should lie flat if the hair is in good condition. The cuticle is the most versatile and resilient layer of the hair, but as it is on the outside it does sustain the most damage, so therefore requires products to strengthen and protect it.
The cortex
The cortex lies beneath the cuticle and gives our hair elasticity and strength. The cortex is built up of fibre like cells and contains the pigment ‘melanin.’ This is what gives us our hair colour and the more melanin the hair contains the darker your hair will be.
The Medulla
Within the centre of the hair shaft is the medulla. The medulla is made up of soft keratin cells that are interspersed with gaps or space. The medulla is the most delicate pat of the hair and damage to this area of the hair is normally irreparable until new hair grows from the root. Damage to the Medulla can occur if bleach/colour or perm lotion is left on the hair too long and penetrates through the cuticle and cortex. Normally the hair will then snap off.
The real human hair extensions we use
Here at Serenity Beauty and Hair we only use real European finest cuticle hair to ensure your hair extensions look good, are soft to the touch and comfortable when in your hair. Here are some facts about the human hair we use:
- Our real hair extensions will not matt, tangle or dry out.
- All the hair cuticles have been placed in the correct direction to ensure your hair will comb and brush easily.
- All the hair cuticles are intact and only the tips and roots have been trimmed off. This prevents the hair from matting and guarantees smooth hair when combing. The cuticle acts as the hairs protective shield and a smooth flat cuticle also gives the real hair extensions amazing shine.
- All of our human hair has been treated with Micro-polymer Cross-Linking and Perma Moisturising Treatment (M.P.C.L) which will last through 100 shampoos ensuring the smoothest, softest hair.
- Micro-polymer Cross-Linking encapsulates the extension hair with micro-Polymers which acts like a fine net. This fills the hair cuticles, resulting in a silky smooth surface.
- The hair maintains most of its original cuticle as it goes through the colouring process, ensuring it is in top condition before it is applied to your hair.
We currently offer 2 different methods of inserting our human hair. Both methods are very reliable but some styles are suited to certain methods only. Our method types are:
Supreme Bond pre-Bonded Extensions System
The hair comes pre-bonded in individual strands with a substance on the root that is then attached to an individual strand of your own hair at the root with heat. The bond cools rapidly after melting. The extensions will last around 3 months (100 washes) but need to be maintained every 6 – 8 weeks. The hair has to be removed by us when they are due to come out to ensure there is no damage to your natural hair and no residue is left behind after removal.
Micro Sealed Flat Weft Extensions System
The wefts are a relatively new system to hair extensions and come in a temporary fitting that lasts for 3 – 6 weeks or a semi-permanent option that lasts at least 3 months. Unlike the pre bonded system the wefts come in an extremely thin strip that makes it nearly invisible in your own hair. Also the wefts do not need any maintenance during the period they are in your hair which makes them quite cost effective long term. They are comfortable to wear and can be cut to style the same as the pre-bonded hair.
